Meet the Real Heroes Behind the Story

Some stories are born in the imagination. This one began in the skies over Europe.

The photograph you see here was taken just before the Hummel B-24 crew left on a mission—one of many they would fly together. In it, ten young men stand side by side, bound by duty and trust. The engines are still silent, with anticipation in the air. They know the risks. They know what’s at stake. And yet, they’re ready.

Each face in this photo tells a story. A story of training fields and air bases. Of cold mornings on the tarmac and roaring engines above the clouds. Of moments when the mission came first, no matter the cost.

In my upcoming WWII novel, Shielding the Fall, these men inspired the characters and events you’ll come to know. While the story blends fact and fiction, the heart of it remains true—drawn from the bravery, sacrifice, and faith these airmen carried into every mission.

This image freezes them in a rare moment—before the roar of takeoff, before the danger ahead, before history unfolded. Some of them would never make it home. Others would carry the war with them for the rest of their lives.

In future posts, I’ll share more about the mission that changed everything and the journey that followed. But for now, I invite you to look closely.

Behind each uniform is a son, a brother, a friend. Behind each smile, a measure of courage that carried them through the unimaginable.
